Yesterday was a wonderful day, exactly what I've been wanting.

I haven't really been enjoying things this spring and summer. I've been fighting biochemistry with B vitamins, fish oil and walks to work, but it hasn't been working very well. I'm used to summers that verge on the edge of mania, three months of frantic ecstasy. Instead, I've been going to bed dreading getting up in the morning and fighting to stay positive.

It's one of the reasons I haven't really written in LiveJournal for a few months. I have this superstitious feeling that writing things down will make them come true. If I'm trying to write honestly about where I'm at, and I'm detailing round x-million with the depression beastie, it makes me more likely to stay in that place. But - aren't you doing that now, you ask. Well, gentle reader, no. I'm not. I'm telling you about what a wonderful day I had yesterday.

[info]roninikoma and I are apartment-hunting. There's a frustrated green-eyed monster in me that's envious of people who own houses, but it's neither very large nor vocal because renting is a way more sensible choice for us right now. We've even seen three places that I'd apply for, and we're looking at three more today. Yesterday morning was a main floor just north of Parkhill, with a deck and a barbecue and a backyard and the world's most accommodating landlords. Today, we're set to see a "gourmet kitchen," a "perfect for professionals" (which sent Aaron into a rage about snobby classist jerks) and one place that we've been instructed to take with a grain of salt, because they're doing major renovations. So we're making headway in that area, which makes me feel good.

After we viewed the apartment yesterday, we ended up downtown. We were on George St. during the sidewalk sale's Unlikely!Metal Hour (hilariously inappropriate). I drank lovely berry tea and forgot to bring someone their food vendor contract again, because I'm basically an idiot as of late. I photosynthesized as much of yesterday's gorgeous sunshine as possible.

We strolled into Ribfest. I can see the advantages of the relocation to the Lewis St. parking lot, but it really seemed like an awful venue. I bought neither beer nor barbecue, but we ran into friends and left to go hang out in a backyard with freezies and beer. (The freezies were falsely promised, but the beer was cold and welcome.)

I think that sometimes it's healthy to do the ordinary, boring things that your parents did. We sat around the patio furniture, drinking beer and listening to bad music on a bad radio, and it was fun. When we left it was to take [info]roninikoma's younger brother (he's eleven) to see Wall-E. He's a good kid, and I suspect he's going to grow up to be terribly well-rounded. The movie was good, though I'm not sure what my expectations were - probably inflated based on all the praise I've heard for it. We went to the early show (eleven year-old) and got to enjoy the sounds of other people's children, including young Billy Points-out-what's-on-screen and Timmy-what-happens-next-Daddy Kicks-the-backs-of-chairs. (This is why I will never have children of my own.) Honestly, I didn't mind very much, but Aaron and Z. were definitely in fraternal agreement that it was So Annoying.

Then dessert with his parents, and then home and in bed.

It was a simple day, but sweet. I burned a little in the hot sun, and still got into cool sheets and a nice breeze at night. I saw the moon hanging thin and golden in the sky. Today I'm that much better than I was the day before.

And, apropos of nothing: when will the bubble hem return back to the foul abyss of its birth? Seriously.

ETA that I used the word "beer" four times in this post.

i'm reading a ethnography of people involved in magic that i got from the curtin library. as i turned the page to page 68, a whole bunch of old and yellowed skin flakes and hair fell out. images of an old nerdy guy scratching his dandruffy hair as he pored over my book come to mind.

ew.

A friend of mine insisted I watch the movie 'Step Up 2: The Streets', so today I did that. The movie is about a girl who is passionate about street dancing and wants to showcase her talent. As expected there are obstacles along the way and then she conquers them all to save the day. To cut a long story short, what I loved about this movie is firstly, the dance moves. They will simply blow you away. And secondly, the whole idea about following your dreams and making them come true

I realized today I love such movies. Courage, determination, faith...all big words, but when you put them into practice, they create nothing less than magic.

I'm on a similar quest. And this movie, like many others of its kind, has made me feel even more optimistic. :-)
